That Pita Place – Naperville, IL

If it’s one thing Katie and I miss, it’s the falafel from Olive Branch in downtown Naperville. It was a tiny restaurant that could easily be passed up, but if they didn’t make the greatest falafel, falafel sandwiches and stuffed grape leaves I’ve ever had. One day they were gone, replaced by a pizza place, which was then replaced by Olive Branch, only to become a completely empty store front. So, looking for a good falafel sandwich in the suburbs, a friend recommended That Pita Place on Ogden Ave. While not a traditional Middle Eastern restaurant by any stretch of the imagination, they do offer a falafel sandwich, and that’s all I needed to hear.

The restaurant feels more like a sandwich or hot dog joint. You almost expect to see a Vienna Beef sign lit up in the window. The store is small, with maybe only 5 or 6 tables, but with a place like this, are you really looking for a classy sit down joint? Hell no! Pita! Now!

Everything from falafel, to stir-fry to meat kabobs is, like the name says, stuffed into a pita. You’re given your choice of toppings, Subway style, it’s wrapped, and you get to eat. It’s a nice alternative from the typical fast food burgers or sub sandwich fare, which is an even nicer break for me, since I’m tired of having my choice between Subway or Potbelly (I don’t like Quiznos or Jimmy Johns).

But how does the food, and in particular the falafel, stand up? Not bad. The falafel sandwich was good, but not amazing. It felt a little light on the falafel to be honest, and the falafel that were in there were a bit dry. On the plus side, the toppings were fresh, and it was a decently sized meal, leaving me full, but not disgustingly so.

Katie’s chicken kabob sandwich earned approval, but she also felt it was missing something. She said the chicken was good, and prepared properly, but overall she wasn’t wowed.

The most disappointing thing about That Pita Place is that it’s simply okay. It’d be easier to say it just wasn’t good at all, because I wanted to really like it. I would go there in a heart beat if I had to choose between them or a chain sandwich shop, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to get there.

It’s a mild recommendation. If you’re in the area looking for a quick bite to eat, and you don’t like the usual fast food grease, give it a shot.

I had the food there today and it was absolutely disgusting! I bought a salad and somehow they managed to mess it up. The luttuce was soaking wet and the bottom of the dish had a pool of watter in it. Also they managed to give me the wrong dressing and te croutons were stale. Im not saying i need first class salad but its sad when i can spend less money on a salad at McDonalds and still get better quality!

I had gyros and they are great.

I agree with Linas. Meditteranean Oasis on Bailey Rd. in Naperville is the best Middle Eastern food I’ve tried in the suburbs. You must try the Shish Taook sandwich … thank me later.

The Hummus is fantastic, and if you’re having a party, you can order a quarter-tray (serves 15 people) and ask them to make it special (with garlic, lemon, parsely). My friend and I finished one such tray in 36 hours!

I finally went and tried this place out. That Pita Place is a great place to go. The food is fresh and you can put anything you want in your sandwich. The person before me was picking his ingredients while his chicken breast was being grilled. You can’t get that at Subway or Quiznos .I had the gyros and for no extra charge I got to put feta cheese and spinach in it. My wife had the falafel and it was very good. They fry up the falafel right in front of you. Their hummous is also very good. I have gone to other places for gyros and nobody does it like That Pita Place. Its a very nice change from the same old sandwich shop concept. They also make awesome pita chips and tabouli.

I too recently tried Mediterranean Oasis Mart and I thought it was excellent. The hummos is out of this world. All their sandwiches taste great especially the beef shawerma. However, I hihgly recommend their ouzie meal it is the most tender lamb I’ve ever tasted.

Ever since the Olive Branch closed I have been looking for a place to get my falafel/shawerma fix in Naperville. I tried That Pita Place, and agree it simply was OK. I recently stumbled upon the Mediterranean Oasis, located at 357 Bailey in Naperville (630-420-9507). It is fantastic. Great authentic Middle Eastern food, expansive menu and a grocery store to boot. Their falafel and chicken/lamb shawermas are some of the best I have had – Check it out, trust me it will be worth it.

That’s probably a pretty good description. I usually get the Falafel/hummous pita and it’s good. Pretty good for the places around, but in no way exceptional.

I typically never eat the fries either, as they’re not very good.
